The short answer

The best months to visit Greece are May, June, September and early October: warm, sunny, with open hotels and ferries and fewer crowds than July and August. For sightseeing on the mainland, April to early June and October are also excellent. Winter suits Athens and cultural trips, but many islands close from November to March.

The meltemi: why August can be windy

The meltemi is a dry northerly wind that blows across the Aegean mostly from mid-May to September and is strongest in July and August. It cools the heat but can delay ferries and make some beaches rough, particularly in the Cyclades. If you are sailing or rely on ferries, add buffer days or choose September.

Heat and archaeological sites

Midsummer midday temperatures in Athens can exceed 35 °C, and archaeological sites have little shade. On very hot days the authorities may adjust opening hours at sites such as the Acropolis. We schedule sites for the first slot of the day and plan a long lunch and a pool break in the middle.

Frequently asked questions

What is the cheapest time to visit Greece?

November to March, apart from the Christmas and New Year period, has the lowest prices, although many island hotels and restaurants are closed. May and October are good value shoulder months.

Is Greece too hot in August?

It can be, especially in Athens and on the mainland. Islands are cooled by the meltemi wind. If you travel in August, book early sightseeing and keep afternoons for the sea.

When is the sea warm enough for swimming?

Most people swim comfortably from June to October. Sea temperatures peak in August and stay warm into October.
