The short answer

Milos is a volcanic Cycladic island celebrated for its extraordinary coastline: the white lunar rocks of Sarakiniko, colourful fishing hamlets with boat garages (syrmata), and more than 70 beaches. The Venus de Milo was found here in 1820.

Milos is quieter and more naturally dramatic than Mykonos or Santorini. Its volcanic history has sculpted caves, cliffs and coloured rock in white, yellow and red.

A private boat day is the best way to see the island’s coastline, particularly Kleftiko, once a pirate hideout, which can only be reached by sea.

Is Milos better than Santorini?

They are different. Milos is wilder and quieter, with better beaches; Santorini has the caldera and the wine. Many travellers combine them.
